Mount Nebo

Mount Nebo is a site of immense importance in our faith story - it is the place where the prophet Moses died. Moses, lead the people of Israel out of slavery into the desert for a period of 40 years in search of the promised land.

On a clear day, today’s pilgrims can see the panorama Moses viewed: The Dead Sea, the Jordan River valley, Jericho, Bethlehem and the hills of Jerusalem in the distance.

Early Christians from Jerusalem made it a place of pilgrimage. In the 3rd or 4th century monks from Egypt built a small church on one of its peaks, to commemorate the end of Moses’ life.

The Franciscans now care for a number of sites in the Holy Land. Over a nine-year period, they carefully restored and preserved many of the artifacts in this sacred place.

We celebrated Mass here - a very moving and special time for us all. Every Mass we attend is another step in own personal pilgrimage through life, whether it be in the Holy Land or at our local parish.

  2. Thank you so much for sharing this Catherine. It is wonderful to see the photos and to read the information about your pilgrimage. This is really marvellous.
